Wealden Police update.

Subject: Operation Consul update (2 updates)

30 January 2012 11:21:02 AM GMT

We are now into the second week of Operation Consul the murder investigation in Hailsham.  I held a meeting with the community yesterday (29th Jan) which 32 people attended.  I would like to thank all those that attended and for the support of the community during this time.

4 people remain on Police bail whilst further enquires continue and one 16yr old male is remanded in custody. As I said to the meeting yesterday I cannot confirm or deny any names given to me or my officers with regards to the person who has been charged. The court has stated that his name will not be released and therefore I would be breaching the court order if I gave out any information.

The key issues to remember with this incident are.

·           This was an isolated incident, which police believe was pre-planned, between people who were known to each other but had a very unfortunate outcome.

·           This is a fast-paced investigation and detectives from the Major Crime Team are pursuing many lines of enquiry.

·           Sussex Police is putting significant resources into local policing in Hailsham to gather evidence and reassure the local community.

·           We recognise that the murder will be devastating for Darren’s family and friends and of considerable concern to the people of Hailsham. We thank them for their continued support and patience.

·           Officers and staff from the Neighbourhood Policing Team are in the local area to assist the investigation and to speak to residents who may be concerned or worried.

·           As the District Commander I have been speaking with local people, councils, schools and businesses and will continue to do so over the coming days. I have also been in regular contact with Darren’s family and friends and they have contact from local Family liaison officers.

As soon as I have more information I will share it with you.  As always please feel free to contact me with any concerns.

Dick Coates - Wealden District Commander.
