Wealden Police update.

Subject: Road safety enforcement

Wealden neighbourhood policing team, Sussex roads policing team and East Sussex Fire and Rescue service came together for a joint road safety enforcement and education event.

2 events have gone ahead successfully so far, 1 in Hailsham and the other in Uckfield. 43 vehicles were pulled over in both events for various road traffic offences. Those committing offences were given the opportunity to talk to the Fire service or take a fixed penalty notice. Every single member of the public decided to watch a video highlighting the consequences of their behaviour and discuss their behaviour with officers. East Sussex Fire and Rescue were on hand to show videos to the public, showing a hard hitting reality of what could happen if they do not learn the lesson.

The event in Hailsham also had a number of vehicles being pulled over after failing to correctly defrost windows before setting off on their journey. This is not only dangerous for the driver, but also for other road users and pedestrians.

Chief Inspector Dick Coates Wealden District Commander said “these events are aimed at educating drivers. Sometimes watching a 5 or 10 minute video at the side of the road and having a talk with the East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service can leave a much more significant mark on a person than a fine. We aim to do events like these over the Christmas period as a reminder to drivers not to take risks." This is about making our roads safer for all. I would like to thank the Safer Wealden partnership for the funding to help put these extra events on across Wealden. Please also remember that drinking and driving does not mix. “

More of these events are planned across Wealden over the Christmas period.

Best wishes

Dick Coates, Wealden District Commander.
