Wealden Police update.
Friday, 7 October, 2011 14:32:31
The safer Wealden partnerships Quality streets event made a dramatic impact recently in Horam and Heathfield after volunteers came together to make a big difference in their community. The areas targeted included the Millennium Green, the Heathfield Millennium Tunnel, the Heathfield skate park and Newnham way Heathfield. All these areas were tidied and rubbish removed making them a much nicer place to live and play. However the major facelift happened at the play area in Horam. A large team of volunteers descended on the play area, clearing weeds, painting play equipment and relaying new bark chippings. The makeover was a resounding success making the play park an area the community can be proud of.
Special thanks need to go out to everyone that helped on the day, all of whom made a real difference. Those helping included, The Wealden Neighbourhood policing team based in Heathfield and supervised by Sgt Ruth Hammerton, Wealden District Council, Horam Parish Council, Horam Village hall committee along with Horam residents- who were invaluable in their efforts to paint and mend the play area. East Sussex Fire and Rescue Service, Pupils from Heathfield community college, Heathfield community college sixth form who filmed a documentary of the day. Julie Kay from youth services and her team of teenage helpers. Frances from Tomorrows people and her team of teenage helpers. Patch and Ali from St Mary’s School and Clear Hedge forestry kindly donated all the wood chippings for the play area. We would also like to say thank you to Sainsburys in Heathfield who provided lunch and snacks for all the hungry workers and Heathfield Tesco Express who provided tea, coffee, milk and biscuits. All of this was provided free of charge and was warmly greeted. Also thanks to Crowborough cars who kept their yard clear so the Lorries and road sweepers could access the tunnel and skate area, allowing the cleanup to take place in record time. Without the help of all these volunteers and donations from local businesses it would not have been possible to complete half of what was achieved. Sgt Hammerton of the Heathfield neighbourhood policing team said “I am immensely proud of the hard work put in by everybody to make such a difference. It is so heartening to see so many volunteers young and old come together and put something back into the community. Hopefully our hard work will be there for many years to come, allowing people to enjoy these areas once more.” This is truly partnership work at its best. Our new electric bikes are out and about across Wealden. Sponsored by the Safer Wealden partnership they have featured in the local press and Meridian/BBC news in recent weeks. Look out for them in your village.
Proud to be serving Wealden.
Dick Coates, Wealden District Commander.
