Wealden Police update. 09/08/11
Date: Tuesday, 09 August, 2011

The incident in Hailsham I informed you all about last week is still under investigation. (see below)
We are still keeping an open mind but from our enquires so far we do tend to feel that no offence took place when the young lady could not remember what happened for a period of time.  Having said that we want to make sure so more enquires are being made and I will update you in due course.  I do not feel there is any risk to any other members of the community at this time.

The news this week is dominated by the unrest in London.  At this time there is no indication that this will spread to Wealden and Policing will continue as normal. If you do hear any rumours or have information that may help please do not hesitate to contact the Police on 0845 6070999 or contact your local officer. I am sure your thoughts, like mine, are with the communities across London who are being targeted by a small minority.
The Donnison case will probably come to a close later this week.  The jury are out at this time.  There has been little press interest in Heathfield so far but this may increase in the coming days.  We will continue to monitor but if any issues arise please contact us.
A newsletter will be dropping through your door any day now with all the contact details of your local neighbourhood team.  It also gives information from the local Safer Wealden Partnership and how you can become a member of Op Blitz.  Please keep it safe.
I am away from the office all being well for a couple of weeks now.  In my absence if you have any issues that cannot be dealt with by your local team please contact the following people.
For general District matters contact Insp Andy Eggleton (

Proud to be serving Wealden.

newsWealden Police update. 02/08/11
Date: 02 August, 2011

We are investigating a POSSIBLE incident in Hailsham over the weekend. We are still in the early stages of this investigation and it may well be that no offence has taken place but enquires are being made in the Stoney Lane area of Hailsham. Officers are making enquires and we are keen to trace a person who may be able to assist in the investigation. I am sure I will know more in the next day or so as this is a fast moving investigation and I will update you as soon as I know more.

Press release as follows.

Detectives want to talk to a man who may hold vital information about what happened to a 16-year-old girl in Hailsham in the early hours of Sunday morning (July 31).
The girl''s friends called police after she made her way to their house between 5 and 6am after waking up in Stoney Lane. Beforehand, she recalls talking to a man in the lane between 3am and 3.30am and having some of his drink that he was carrying in a tall glass with a straw, but nothing after that.
Detective Inspector Rob Morland said: "We are in the early stages of investigating this incident and have yet to obtain a full account from the victim, who is being offered continued support from specialist officers. I should like to stress that we have not yet been able to clarify what happened to the girl and it is possible that the explanation for her predicament is entirely innocent.

"However, this man who she remembers talking to after she had been socialising at the Corn Exchange earlier in the evening could well provide the answer and we are very keen to talk to him. He is white, in his 20s, around 6'', of muscular build, but with a big belly and chubby cheeks. He has a distinctive nose that points upwards, large ears and a dark monobrow. He was wearing a light-coloured Fred Perry short-sleeved shirt that was buttoned to the top, light blue trousers tucked into his socks and Nike black and grey trainers.

"I should like to thank local residents for their support while a forensic examination of the scene, which is towards the Common Pond end of Stoney Lane, takes place and neighbourhood officers conduct house-to-house inquiries as part of the investigation."
Anyone with information is asked to contact Sussex Police on 0845 60 70 999 quoting Operation Hull or  the independent charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
Thanks as always.
Dick Coates, District Commander
