wealdenWealden News  December 2011

Snow and ice may be on the way to us so it could be useful this month to outline the County Council’s policy on winter maintenance.

The County has 2000 miles of roads and cannot grit them all so they concentrate on A and B roads and 75% of C roads which are the most heavily used. The normal salting routes cover just over 40% of the total road network.

There are 4 weather monitoring stations located throughout the county and when snow or near freezing temperatures are forecast, the roads will be treated. Generally roads are treated after the evening rush hour or before the morning rush hour.

Secondary roads are not normally  salted unless snow or severe icy conditions are predicted. These secondary roads generally include  major bus routes  and link roads in to villages and urban estates and cover another 200 miles .Regrettably if your road is not in either the list of primary or secondary roads it will not be gritted.

County will maintain existing grit bins and new bins can be provided by Parish Councils or residents’asociations.

Householders and businesses are encouraged to clear snow and ice from pavements and to help neighbours. Government advice is that you cannot be sued for clearing pavements but anyone may be at risk if they clear the snow so badly that things are worse than before!

In Uckfield this year a Community Snow scheme is being tested. Shopkeepers have been offered a cut price deal to buy salt and shovels and encouraged to cleat pavements. Volunteers are being sought to help with this. Wealden Council will keep the Car Parks clear and County will do the principal roads but it is hoped that volunteers will do the rest.

Hopefully we are all better prepared this year and the snow will stay a way . A vain hope!
